Dusty Ayres and His Battle Birds #1: Black Ligh...

One of the most daring series ever to emerge from Harry Steeger´s Popular Publications was when he converted Battle Birds magazine to Dusty Ayres and His Battle Birds back in 1934. Not content to tell tales of World War I, the new title focused on forecasting the next war! Set in an indeterminate future, the new series was out-and-out-science fiction built around the popular aviation genre. Flying the futuristic Silver Flash aircraft, backed up by wingmen Curly Brooks and Biff Bolton, Captain Dusty Ayres strove every month to beat back the forces of the modern Genghis Khan called Fire-Eyes, who had conquered all but North America. In this, the first series outing, the assault on America commences. With Europe in the grasping hands of the Black Invaders and the US Naval Fleets split by the destruction of the Panama Canal, the future looks bleak for the nation. But the Black Dart warplanes of the enemy were about to strike a wall of screaming steel - Air Group #7, commanded by Dusty Ayres! The wonderful thing about Dusty Ayres and his Battle Birds is that when Popular decided to end the series, Bowen penned a concluding chapter, trying up all loose ends, and bringing the glorious conflict to a satisfying conclusion. So fasten your seat belts! Here starts the wildest ride in pulp aviation history! Black Lightning is read with dazzling urgency by Alan Taylor. This audiobook also features two additional Robert Sidney Bowen stories of the war against the forces of Fire-Eyes, ´´The C.O.´s Coffin´´ and ´´The Smoke-Screen Ace,´´ read by Milton Bagby. 1. This latest volume of autobiography opens in 1934, in an isolated hamlet in the Cotswolds. Mr. Croft-Gooke was 30 years old. He had published six novels, was earning £300 a year, and considered himself ´an enviable young man´. He had a house with peacocks on the lawn. He was happy. He decided however to revisit Argentina, where he travelled extensively, lecturing and meeting old friends and new. When he returned to his isolated hamlet, in fog and snow, he was no longer happy, but restless and unsettled. He decided to go back to Kent, where he was born. With charm and humour, Mr. Croft-Cooke vividly re-creates the places and people of his youth. As a reviewer in The Times Literary Supplement wrote: ´Social historians of the future will do well to consult Mr. Croft-Cooke´s in preference to certain more pretentious and less objective memoirs of the period.´ About the Author: The English author Rupert Croft-Cooke (1903-1979) published 30-odd novels on a wide variety of subjects in his lifetime, as well as poetry, plays, nonfiction books on such diverse topics as Buffalo Bill, Oscar Wilde, Lord Alfred Douglas, Victorian writers, criminals, the circus, gypsies, wine, cookery, and darts. Under the pen name of Leo Bruce he also wrote more than 30 crime novels. At the age of 20, Croft-Cooke spent two years in Buenos Aires, where he founded the journal La Estrella. In 1925 he returned to London and began a career as a freelance journalist and writer. His work appeared in a variety of magazines, including New Writing, Adelphi, and the English Review. In the late 1920s the American magazine Poetry published several of his plays. He was also a radio broadcaster on psychology. In 1940 he joined the British Army and served in Africa and India until 1946. He later wrote several books about his military experiences. From 1953 to 1968 Croft-Cooke lived in Morocco where he wrote his Sensual World series, possibly his most ... 1. Language: English. Narrator: Robert Young. Sewing! NO ONE could hate it more than Dina Kirk. Endless tiny stitches, button holes, darts. Since she was tiny, she´s worked in her family´s dressmaking business, where the sewing machine is a cranky member of the family. When 13-year-old Dina leaves her small town in Germany to join her uncle´s family in Brooklyn, she turns her back on sewing. Never again! But looking for a job leads her right back to the sewing machine. Why did she ever leave home? Here she is, still with a needle and thread, and homesick to boot. She didn´t know she could be this homesick, but she didn´t know she could be so brave either, as she is standing up to an epidemic, then to a fire. She didn´t know she could grow so close to her new family or to Johann, the young man from the tailor´s shop. And she didn´t know that sewing would reveal her own wonderful talent, and her future. In Dina, the beloved writer Patricia Reilly Giff has created one of her most engaging and vital heroines. Readers will enjoy seeing 1870s Brooklyn through Dina´s eyes, and share her excitement as she discovers a new world. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Blair Brown.
